Councillors to cost rate payers R5 Million more

Taxpayers will have to cough up an additional R5 874 071-million to cover the increase in Ekurhuleni Metro councillors’ salaries for the 2013/14 financial year.

EKURHULENI – The salary increase is a five per cent across the board increase, effective from March and to be backdated to July, last year, for all councillors in the metro.

The total budget for the annual salaries of the 174 part time councillors, 15 Section 79 committee chairpersons, 10 members of the Mayoral Committee, the Speaker of council and the mayor stands at R97 285 812.

This means that the annual total remuneration package for the mayor will increase from R1 068 153 to R1 121 561 and the Speaker of council from R854 523 to R897 249.

In addition, the executive mayor and the Speaker receive cellphone allowances of R41 820 per annum, while the rest of councillors receive R20 868.

All will receive a total of R5 600 in mobile data cards per annum.

The salaries of councillors are determined by the full council, by resolution of a supporting vote of the majority of the members of council, in consultation with the MEC responsible for local government.
