Illegal dumping rages on in Alberton townships

Illegal dumping of waste is an environmental crime that is ongoing and a highly visible problem in SA.

EDEN PARK – It is the unlawful deposit of waste larger than litter onto land or into water. It includes waste materials that have been dumped, tipped or otherwise deposited onto land where no licence or approval exists to accept such waste. Illegal dumping varies from small bags of rubbish, trees, dead animals etc.

When one drives through these areas, there is a lot of illegal dumping taking place. Practically every vacant area is used for illegal dumping. It is very disappointing to see how residents do not have respect for mother earth. The council provides services for the removal of solid waste, and they even give us calendars for solid waste removal days.

Is it so difficult for residents to take their solid waste to the dumping area which is provided or even use our waste bins. Residents are even dumping dead dogs and other animals on these vacant spaces causing problems with rats and other infestations.

I would like to make an appeal to residents: let us take responsibility for the areas we live in. Illegal dumping is a crime. Report these incidents to our local council. Local councils play a crucial role in managing and preventing illegal dumping in their local areas. Illegal dumping can occur in city and country areas and on public and privately owned land. Illegally dumped waste can cause damage to land, water and culture and can be a health risk to the community.

Contaminated fill can risk the health of families, permanently devalue property and result in substantial clean-up costs. Fines for illegally using waste as fill may also be hefty.
