Time to care for AMCARE

With funds at a critical low, every donation, no matter how small, will make a difference at AMCARE.

ALBERTON – He may be only 11 years old, but this young man has a heart of gold. Brendon Bolton from Randhart arrived at the AMCARE Centre of Faith, Hope & Love last week with a food donation, items he bought from his pocket money.

“It never seizes to amaze me how what we do and achieve here continue to touch the hearts of members of our community, young and old,” says Percy Howroyd, administrator at AMCARE.

Brendon is a pupil at Alberview Primary and according to his grandmother, Eleanor, Brendon went shopping with his mom at Pick n Pay and insisted that he wanted to buy food for AMCARE. “He chose all the items himself and paid for it with his own money,” she says.

According to Brendon, a discussion about helping others was held at the school during assembly. AMCARE was mentioned and he then decided that he wanted to help AMCARE.

“It is a wonderful gesture,” says Percy. “January and February are never good months for us. Funds are running low, yet we have to continue to provide the services we do.

“There are at least 350 OVC’S (orphans and vulnerable children) who depend on us and over 500 adults relying on us. Those who just arrive on our doorstep for help, advice and a once-off food parcel are not even included in these figures,” Percy explains.

On average, AMCARE distributes 350 loaves of bread a week and close to 1 000 food parcels per month. “Our petrol account averages R20 000 per month, so yes, things can get tough around here when funds are running low,” Percy explains.

Percy also wishes to thank everyone for their support over the Christmas period. “We estimate that we received at least four tons of bones from Pick n Pay and Alberton Meat Market, which were distributed to many people who cook them with our spinach and mealie meal. We also distributed 20 large boxes of bananas.”

With the support of the community, AMCARE was also in a position to have distributed hundreds of Christmas gifts to underprivileged children over the festive period.

“We rely heavily on the community and business to assist us in being able to deliver these services,” Percy says. If you can help in any way whatsoever, please give AMCARE a call on 011 869 5856.
