Marrow the size of a watermelon in Alberton

The story of a marrow and a mill in the very same yard proves an interesting family home.

ALBERTON NORTH – Jan van Wyk, an Alberton North resident, has in his uniqueness had a windmill on his premises since he moved there and a couple of weeks ago he managed to grow a massive marrow in his vegetable garden.

Jan got seeds from one of his wife’s friends thinking it was a farm pumpkin seed. He has already had to cut move the bricks around the garden so that the marrow does not damage.

The marrow is the size of a fully ripe watermelon… if not bigger. Jan also has beans, carrots, spinach, potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers and radishes in his vegetable garden, which grows just as good.

Most of the vegetables are frozen, eaten and given away when there is too much. Jan also had a smaller marrow which he gave away. ‘I think you can eat the marrow, I have heard that it is quite nice if you hollow it out and stuff it with different meats and other foods and spices.

Jan learn gardening from his step father and loved it ever since. He always used to help in the garden as a little boy and now he spends time with his grandson, Joshua van Wyk.

The windmill on his premises was already there when he moved there in 31 years ago, after it was owned by Jan’s father. He grew up in Alberton and now parents bring their children to come and see the windmill.

It is still fully functional and the water it produces is used for the garden and if there is a water shortage. Jan is not prepared to part with his good old reliable, although it has not stopped people from requesting to purchase the mill.
