JG Strydom left in a bad state

Residents have had enough with the trenches on JG Strydom Road, Mayberry Park and would like to see it fixed.

MAYBERRY PARK – A few months ago, Ekurhuleni workers conducted repair work on water pipes in JG Strydom Road, Mayberry Park, leaving it looking like a mess with safety hazards in the road.

The repair work was done, although trenches have been left behind with yellow barriers blocking off the mess. This causes a lot of confusion since it is a road used often by motorists.

On the other end of the road, sand which was dug up is growing muddier with the recent rains and will soon flow into the street, also something which could cause a major accident.

Many residents have complained that they have been in contact with council workers but have hit a dead end with only a reference number to show.

“As a rate payer I am appealing to the powers that be to please take this as a matter of urgency and to conduct the necessary repair work to these trenches, and to tar the surfaces to avoid motorists driving in the opposite oncoming traffic lanes to prevent possible fatal accidents from happening,” said a concerned resident.

Another resident complained about the amount of traffic that accumulates in the morning. If you are driving behind another vehicle and the driver swerves to avoid hitting the trench, you will be too late and will most probably drive right through it.

“I have been a Mayberry Park resident for 30 years and now I have had enough… enough paying taxes for such poor service,” said the resident.

Councillor Michael Basch responded, “The road works on this stretch of JG Strydom Road has been a long standing issue. This all stems from a leaking water main pipe below the road that has become a serious problem.

“I have been engaging with Roads and Water, both of whom have given me assurances that the problem is nearing completion and should shortly be resolved. I am not going to just accept their word for it but will be following up vigorously.

“I do apologise to the community as this has taken far longer than originally projected and has caused much disruption in the area, but rest assured, I will push the department for resolution.”
