SPCA rescues animals during the festive season of 2013

SPCA care for the animals of Alberton during the festive season of 2013

ALBERTON – During the end of 2013 puppies were donated to the Alberton SPCA because some people could not or were unable to look after them during the holiday period and some animals were found on the streets because of fireworks.

Acting manager K. Sibiza explained that: “The people did not have the time to nurture or provide the necessities for the puppies. They thought it would be appropriate to bring them here.”

“There were also cats and kittens brought through to us.”

Around 100 strays were found during December 19 up until January 2 (These included dogs and cats).

The yearly disturbance of fireworks causes the influx of all the animals during the festive season. “As much as we try and educate people not to use fireworks, some are stubborn and don’t listen.”

“Everybody who sells fireworks – the fireworks have to be approved in order to sell it. Regardless, it is an ongoing thing that happens every year and it is problematic, especially for the animals.

“Certain breeds, such as Maltese and Jack Russell are easily traumatized – some try to run away from the disturbance and get injured in the process. Their sense of hearing is highly sensitive and any sudden noise can cause them to react,” said K. Siziba.

“The community should be aware of the problems that are caused by fireworks and people should act responsibly.”
