Buying the right car to suit your needs

Don't sign on the dotted line until you've sized up all your options when it comes to buying the right car.

Two’s company

If you’re single or a couple with no immediate plans for kids, a two seater should suit you perfectly. Just make sure there’s enough room in the boot for your luggage, golf clubs or shopping. If you’re going for a convertible, check how much space the roof takes up in the boot when it’s retracted. In some cars you’ll battle to squeeze in anything bigger than a briefcase.

Family way

Whether you’ve got one or three kids, a mid-sized sedan or hatchback is your most practical choice. If budget is a consideration, some smaller cars are cleverly designed to make the most of every available centimetre of interior space. Choose one with four doors – a two door coupé, quickly loses its appeal on the daily school run. Ensure there’s enough room in the boot for school bags and sports kit.

Go big

If you regularly ferry more than three kids around, a regular car is going to be too small. Today’s version of the minibus comes in several modern options that are easy to drive and park, like regular sedans. Before you buy, ask the salesman to demonstrate how to access the rear seats and fold them away – with some more expensive models it can be done at the touch of a button.

Cover charge
There’s no doubt a twin-cab bakkie or SUV projects a sporty image. But if the closest you come to bundu bashing is ramping the pavement at the rugby, don’t choose a 4×4 model, unless you actually enjoy paying way more in insurance each month than you need to. These hulking heavyweights also drink a lot more fuel than regular cars.
