Zuma signs Information Bill into law

South President African President Jacob Zuma signed a Protection of Personal Information Bill (POPI) into law, the presidency announced on Wednesday November 27.

JOHANNESBURG – Presidential Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement, “The Act will give effect to the right to privacy, by introducing measures to ensure that the personal information of an individual is safeguarded when it is processed by responsible parties.”

The bill aims to promote protection of personal information processed by public and private bodies.

Maharaj explained, “The Act also seeks to balance the right to privacy against other rights, particularly the right of access to information, and to generally protect important interests, including the free flow of information within and across the borders of the Republic.”

According to mybroadband.co.za, “No commencement date was announced, but Michalsons Attorneys said in a statement to expect the president to proclaim one in about 6 months.”

It is believed the Information Regulator needs time to establish itself and the commencement could be staggered.

Mybroadband reported, “A grace period for companies of one year from the date of commencement is also expected.”
