Child care availble 24/7 at Little Sharks and Dolphins

A 24 hour nursery school opened after one woman saw the need with today's rushed life.

ALBERTON – Fourteen years ago Jean-Marie had her first born, who had half a heart, and no nursery school would take her in. Realising the need, she opened a fully-fledged Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD Centre) called Little Sharks and Dolphins.

Little Sharks and Dolphins was opened three years ago. It is registered with the Education and Health Departments and 14 other departments. Huge amounts of research was done to open the ECD site.

Children are taught according to the NELDS and CAPS Curriculum as per Department of Education. They are also taught the difference between work, learning and playing. Little Sharks and Dolphins is open from 06:00 to 19:00 from Mondays to Fridays.

It also does not close during normal public holidays, school holidays but it is closed for all Christian holidays.

It was also opened for parents who work odd shifts and long hours, who are unable to pick up their children at the times most of the normal nursery schools close.

Distance, work functions and life situations happen… some expected and others not so much, Little Sharks and Dolphins is there to assist. If a child needs to be dropped off either before or after those times, all a parent needs to do is to make prior arrangement and a qualified person will receive and look after the child.

“Here they have 24 hour care, we are registered and capable of feeding, bathing, changing, putting down to sleep and educating the children and babies while following a strict routine and sleeping pattern,” said Jean-Marie.

The 24 hour facility is not for parents to relinquish their responsibilities and have a reckless lifestyle, but is there for people that don’t have a social support structure to look after their children, when something needs to happen after hours. We all know what can happen to children left in the care of someone that doesn’t care for their health and safety.

Jean-Marie is a qualified first aid instructor, completed the school readiness workshop, training in the CAPS curriculum, CAPS assessment workshop and HIV/Aids awareness workshop.

As owner, Jean-Marie, together with nine staff members, makes sure that the nursery school runs smoothly and takes good care of the children they look after and it shows in the children’s expressions.

Little Sharks and Dolphins have expanded to the premises next door, 49 Steenbok Road Verwoerdpark, where they will be able to facilitate the children in more classrooms.

They are fully bilingual and have only had positive feedback from parents of the school.
