Thieves clean out butchery

Farida's Halaal meat market in Corona Street suffered a great loss when five notorious thieves broke into the shop at 02:30 on Saturday October 12 and stole all the meat and spices.

EDEN PARK – “The five aged between 17 and 31 years of age are well known thieves in the area. We just knew who to look for and the arrest was successful.

They broke into the shop in the early hours of the morning and stole all the meat, spices and airtime vouchers and before they left, they broke the scale, till and anything they could lay their hands on,” said Inspector D Phillips.

The five suspects appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court on Monday October 14 for bail application. They were granted bail; with the exception of the 31-year-old, who has an outstanding previous case of housebreaking. “I am glad the cops arrested the suspects, although they disappointed me when I called them on Saturday while the break-in was taking place. They said they had no van to attend to the burglary, which was just opposite the police station entrance (100 metres). The thieves could have been caught red-handed if the police just walked across the street,” said Gulaam Khan of the butchery.

Khan further said he would like to thank the person who phoned him to inform him about the burglary. He also reported that on Monday after the court appearance, one of the thieves came to the shop and said they have not finished and that they will be back. What arrogance.
