Stop, there’s a zebra crossing

Crossing a road is generally a dangerous thing to do, unless there is a zebra crossing which gives pedestrians right of way.

RANDHART – Jacqueline Avenue has now become safer for school learners from Marais Viljoen High School to cross the road due to a zebra crossing being painted on the road close to the school on October 29.

The zebra crossing is also right in front of a nursery school, making it even better for the little ones to be safe and learn about safety at the same time.

Motorists need to be cautious when approaching the crossing as it is compulsory to stop if pedestrians have already started walking across the road.

One resident told the RECORD, “I was driving this morning, October 30, and noticed the crossing. I also saw that children were about to cross the road so I stopped for them. Sadly the motorist next to me in the other lane did not pay any attention to the crossing and carried on driving over the crossing.

“Thankfully the children had not crossed to that side of the road and weren’t in any danger, but what happens when other motorists do not take note either?”

Although no signs were put up by October 30, residents confirmed that the workers were still busy with the completion of that piece of road and its signs.

Motorists are forewarned to take caution and pay special attention to learners crossing the road throughout the day and especially before and after schools hours.
