Accident kills father of three

An Alberton resident died after he and his son were knocked off their scooter.

ALBERTON NORTH – On October 7 a Mazda 323 hit a Vuka scooter, carrying André Steyn and his 7-year-old son, on the corner of First Avenue and Radio Street, Alberton.

The accident happened at about 18:45. André suffered severe head injuries, although he was still walking around at the scene because of adrenaline and shock. The driver of the Mazda stayed at the scene although André’s sister Anel said that the driver did not seem too worried.

Father and son were driving home from Lampton when the driver of the Mazda turned in front of them and knocked over the scooter.

André’s son broke his leg and sadly his dad passed away on October 8 in the Natalspruit Hospital around 02:45, a day before his birthday. He also has two daughters.

Anel said that there were many witnesses, including a taxi full of people who were travelling behind André. They also met up with a man in hospital, whose son was lying in a bed next to André.

The eyewitnesses, who they have already spoken to, have all said that André was not in the wrong but the driver of the Mazda was.

The family are pleading with community members or eyewitnesses of the accident to come forward and contact Anel 074 118 2122 with vital information regarding the accident.

The driver of the Mazda 323 has been charged with reckless and negligent driving and will appear in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.
