Card theft prowlers on the loose

Card thieves managed to escape with at least R2 000 after tricking a woman trying to draw money from the bank.

ALBERTON – On Friday morning September 18, Mrs Lombaard went to the FNB ATM at Alberton Mall. She drew R200 from her account, took her slip and card, and walked away. A stranger approached her and informed her that sheā€™d have to put her card back into the machine again because someone could still draw from her account.

She keyed in her pin code to the system which showed various transaction options that she had never seen before. During this time, Mrs Lombaard called the FNB bank number 0800 110 132. The bank assistant had cancelled the card but during the process, withdrawals had been made from her account.

The card had not been cancelled in time during the period of withdrawals which took up to 10 minutes from the time of calling until last amount drawn out. Mrs Lombaard quickly went downstairs to go and check if anyone from the other ATM machine had been doing anything but no one was in sight. The withdrawals in total came to R2 000, which by October 16 had not yet been paid back to Mrs Lombaard.

Branch Manager of FNB Alberton stated no information can be disclosed with regards to this incident.
