Unsung heroes of our emergency services

You are invited to join in the first ever emergency medical services games

ALBERTON – The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies trauma as a major cause of death and disability worldwide. The commemoration of World Trauma Day emphasises the importance of saving and protecting life during the most critical events, whatever the scale thereof.

Resa van der Merwe, general manager of Netcare Union Hospital says emergency medical services (EMS) personnel are among the individuals who play a vital role in saving lives in the most traumatic of circumstances. “From trauma resulting from major disasters to accidents. It is fitting that we should pay tribute to their courage, dedication, commitment and professionalism in the service of others,” she says.

“Netcare Union Hospital’s emergency department has a level 1 accredited trauma centre, one of only two such facilities in South Africa. The team of trauma doctors and nursing professionals at the centre witness on a daily basis how timely and skilled intervention by emergency medical services personnel contributes to a better outcome for patients. World Trauma Day is an opportunity to recognise the ‘unsung heroes’ of our emergency services who are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies and create an awareness of the remarkable job they do every day,” saysMande Toubkin, general manager emergency, trauma, transplant and corporate social responsibility at Netcare.

Netcare Union Hospital will be hosting its first World Trauma Day EMS Games at the Glen Shopping Centre in Alberton on Thursday, October 17 to honour members of emergency services and pay tribute to the selfless work they do.

“The Games will test the physical and mental strength of all participants, with challenging yet fun obstacles and loads of fun guaranteed. All members of the public are invited to join in the fun at the shopping centre between 09:00 and 12:00. Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support and appreciation for these extraordinary men and women,” concludes Van der Merwe.
