Registered users billed for e-toll

DA in Gauteng says e-tolling in Gauteng is nowhere near from being implemented considering there is problem with Sanral’s billing system.

ALBERTON – With e-tolling expected to start in November, Democratic Alliance (DA), Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL) Neil Campbell emphasises, “Sanral should stop wasting public money trying to fix an unworkable system and heed public opposition to the project and can it in its entirety.”

After the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters announced that e-tolling may be implemented from November, Campbell slammed the system with claims that it is ‘unworkable’.

Campbell said, “Sanral’s e-toll billing blunder shows yet again that the system is unworkable and that the agency is hell-bent on shoving e-tolls onto Gauteng commuters despite widespread resistance and rejection.”

Reports from the Citizen revealed that although Sanral has not started charging for e-tolls, its billing system has started sending out statements showing that registered prepaid users have outstanding amounts on their accounts.

Sanral further confirms that there is a known error on the pre-paid account notifications that do not display the credit amounts ‘properly’.

Considering the flaws with the system, Campbell believes, “The costly advertising campaign launched by Sanral, which will eventually be paid for by the public, provides further evidence that they are extremely concerned about public rejection of their ‘baby’.”
