Alberton resident ready to turn professional

An Alberton resident and learner is well on his way to becoming a professional pool player.

ALBERTON – At the age of five Timothy Coetzee (15) went missing at the Olifants River Lodge, his parents found him on a milk crate at the pool table playing pool.

“On my 13th birthday I bought my first professional cue,” said Timothy. He is now, years later, playing his way to the top, placing second in u.18 Gauteng for the National Black Ball Federation (NBF) and second in the Basil’s Billiards NBF team event.

He achieved a break and finish at the u.18 Gauteng NBF.

Basil took Timothy under his wing in 2011 where he started playing as a reserve and later switched to the fast lane. “Pool is now going into the schools and is growing as a sport,” he said.

He also went to the SA Championship in Cape Town from September 21 to 26 where he took part in various events.

Timothy, a student at Dinamika High School, belongs to Basil’s Billiard’s at Deja Vous Sports Lounge in Mondeor.

His parents are ever-supporting of this unique and unconventional sport and stand by his side. “We are very proud of him and attend just about everything we are able to,” they said.

Timothy is an avid gamer, loves his motorbike and most of all he loves God.

“I love beating the “toppies” when they underestimate me because of my age,” Timothy said with a proud smile.

He is asking the community who would be interested in starting a team to compete with, to contact Basil 082 870 8781. He concluded that he would love to play in international leagues and that practising his beloved sport is no fuss as it just comes naturally.
