Protesters take to the streets

Strikers are now walking the streets protesting for what they think is a fair salary.

ALBERTON: Strikers strike again and again, making themselves heard and seen in and around Alberton over the past few days… striking for more money.

On September 17, petrol attendants who were on strike filed into the BP garage on Swartkoppies Road in order to protest in respect of a higher salary of R12 500 per month.

Motorists, who were at the garage while strikers were protesting, left in a hurry as they feared for their lives. The garage was also completely empty, except for the strikers and later on, the police.

The protesters resorted to using stones and other objects to throw at the cars arriving. Later, the manager of the garage took matters into his own hands and helped the motorists who were brave enough to put petrol in.

The very next day, September 18, the unsettling crowd of protestors took to the streets again, walking along Ring Road with sticks and bright red T-shirts.

They walked to New Redruth Village and the garage in Eaton Terrace Road.
