Shammah needs your help

Help from the community can help Shammah and the children.

Safehouse for the abused, abandoned and lost children, Shammah is on the brink of deteriorating because of the lack of support.

The non-profit organisation started four years ago by the Jonkers couple in South Hills, they wanted to give shelter and love to destitute children, children who have no one to look after them. Most of the day to day running of the organisation is out of their pockets.

“To us this was a calling, we prayed to God and He showed us this, it is a Ministry on its own. Firstly we were at the Victim Empowerment in Booysens. Through experience there, we thought there was a need for this kind of organisation. Mostly police (Moffatview) bring children here and we take care of them, we currently have five children who live here permanently,” explained Katherine Jonkers.

When they started this organisation their car was stolen and they never recovered it, it is now challenging to transport toddlers to clinic or hospital when they are sick. Also their house was repossessed by the bank, they are now renting one in South Hills. “With these challenges we are struggling to make ends meet however we love to help these children. Community or established structures must come forward and help us, we are in need of clothing, food, toys and transport,” said Katherine.

Vicky Sepp who works with Meals on Wheels also called on anyone in the South to help Shammah succeed in its mission, to help children. Children’s ages range from eight months to four years, they also have a teenager who they take care of at Shammah.
