Calisto’s remains a firm favourite

Fancy eating out? Choose Calisto's for the perfect meal.

SERVING the people of the South, east, north and west since 1992, Calisto’s Portuguese Restaurant is still a firm favourite with diners and their delicious Portuguese cuisine is still tops!

Deciding to enjoy a mid-week treat, three of us went there for an early dinner last week. To be honest I didn’t think I’d have to book but thank goodness I did, as most tables were full and as we were leaving at 20:30 diners were still arriving.

What puts Calisto’s above the rest is the vibey atmosphere, professional but friendly service and a personal interest in each and every customer. Our waiter tended to our drink choice first, a Boschendal Le Bouquet and while we relaxed with a glass of wine the waiter informed us of the dishes which are highly recommended. I have to say the seafood rice sounded delectable but it’s a dish to share with other diners at the table and we all wanted something different.

We did glance at the starter menu and would have loved to have indulged but Calisto’s are very generous with their portions so we went straight on to the main course, although we did manage to have a bite or two of fresh, crispy Portuguese rolls.

I chose the fillet steak (300g) medium rare with chips. My knife cut through the steak like it was butter and tasted delicious. My husband decided on six king prawns (a highly recommended dish), a fantastic choice, served with fluffy rice. He’s very fussy with prawns but said the prawn fell away from the shell and they were cooked to perfection. Our friend had fillet trinchado served in a creamy Maderia sauce, which was absolutely delicious with tender fillet cubes.

No meal is complete until dessert has been served and although we were feeling comfortably full we couldn’t resist vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate sauce, yummy! Could we manage it? Oh, yes, a smooth and delicious Irish coffee, a perfect ending to a perfect meal!
