House on fire

The owner of the home said he was not sure how it started or what caused the fire but suspected an electric fault.

A FIRE which started in the TV room at about 09:40 spread throughout a section of the house, burning it to the ground in Doron Street, Randhart on August 17.

The owner of the home was on his way to a funeral when the fire started. His two daughters and two grandchildren were also in the house at the time. The family suffered no severe injuries, although the grandchildren were treated for fire inhalation.

The owner of the home said he was not sure how it started or what caused the fire but suspected an electric fault.

“The only appliances which were switched on were the fridge and the DSTV,” he said.

The family lost all their valuables in the fire. They do fortunately have home insurance.

Netcare 911, Ekurhukleni EMS, Fire Department and Fox Security were all on the scene, each doing their bit to get the fire under control and the people to safety.

George Skopelitis from Fox Security was patrolling the area and saw the smoke. He drove to the house and called it through to all emergency services.

Emergency services employees worked hard to get the situation under control, while the family stood heartbroken.

A next door neighbour, Rui Cruz, witnessed this and played out an act of kindness as he drove to the shop and bought everybody cold drinks.

The fire department also had their first opportunity to use their new fire engines, which was handed over by Ekurhuleni on August 7.
