Mondeor SAP rooting out dealers

For the past five years in Gauteng, Johannesburg South has reportedly topped Crime Stop statistics of the most positive tip-offs received yielding positive results.

With @changeagent and Environmentalist Catherine Constantinides together with Lead SA #DrugWatch endorsing the campaign in various areas including Mondeor with a high number of youngsters engaging in drug activities, Marisa Oostuizen of Lead SA says this shows the communities willingness to pass on information for the police to act on also allowing insight into the prevalence of drugs in the area.

ā€œWhile illicit drugs are still freely available in communities, it is still a problem,ā€ said Oostuizen.

Mondeor SAPS Spokesperson Elizabeth Mangwini explained that most of their arrests are made during stop and search operations by the police however, getting to the source of the drugs has proved to be problematic.

ā€œWe get a lot of arrests but we donā€™t get information on the dealers of the drugs,ā€ she said.

According to Warrant Officer Mangwini, communities such as Naturena, Mondeor, Suiderood, Turffontein, Winchester, Eikenhof and Meredale are some of the residential areas where drug activity has been detected.

ā€œWe have confiscated close to 350 kilograms of illicit drugs that include Nyaope, Cocaine, CAT, LSD and Heroin. Operations are continuing and provincial police are committed to this collective effort to fight the scourge of drugs in the province,ā€ said Gauteng police spokesman, Brigadier Neville Malila.

Although some residents have reported seeing groups of High School boys indulging in marijuana in their neighbourhood parks over the June/ July school holidays, Tebogo Seete and Devan say that not enough is being done to combat youth drug addiction.

They believe that police officers know exactly where the drugs are sold and who sells them but drug runners are targeted by police officers because it is easy to make an arrest and secure a conviction as the contraband is most likely to be found on them.

ā€œGo to any police station and in the cells youā€™ll find that thereā€™s weed smokers, people who smoke all these drugs and drug runners who were caught selling for the main dealer,ā€ said the men who also allege that drug runners are sometimes caught in front of a drug dealers place of business, which in the South of Johannesburg in areas like Southdale, Turfontein and Crown Gardens, are also brothels.

Drug Watch will reportedly, in the coming weeks, also focus intensely on drug dealing at night clubs and schools. The public has been urged to provide detailed information.

Mondeor SAPS encourages residents to keep reporting any suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods and contribute to fight the scourge of drug abuse and crime, by knowing your police Sector vehicle contact number you could report anything at any time.
