Excuses for speeding on Sundays

Six motorists ended up behind bars when speed enforcement was conducted on Sunday morning, August 18 on the N12 Eastbound freeway between Voortrekker Road and the R59.

Two male drivers, one on a black Suzuki motorbike and the other in a white VW Citi Golf were arrested when caught doing 171km/h on this 120km/h zone stretch of road. Reasons advanced were that of being late for work and rushing to church respectively. The second highest speed registered was by a male driver in a silver VW Polo sedan clocked at 166km/h claiming that he was late for work.

The rest, including a female driver in a blue Porsche Cayenne who cited her reason as ā€œjust cruisingā€, were clocked at speeds of between 161 and 165km/h.

It is a good thing their brakes were in perfect working order when they were pulled off by metro police.

The motorists were charged at Alberton police station and later released on bail of between R500 and R1 000. They are all expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrateā€™s Court soon to face reckless and negligent driving charges.

Meanwhile, in the past week, thirteen vehicles were discontinued when found to be unfit to be operated on our public roads. Seven drivers were booked for robot violations; ten for disregarding stop and yield signs; nineteen for defective lights, tyres and brakes; ninety-one for stopping and parking offences; ten for seatbelts; seven for failing to display number plates; three for registration and licensing offences; three for using cellphones without a hands-free kit while driving. Ten drivers were fined for not having their driving licences in their vehicles and twelve were issued with fines for invalid professional driving permits.
