Passenger dies in accident

A case of culpable homicide has been opened against the 36-year-old driver of a vehicle which was involved in an accident, after one of his passengers died in the impact.

EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng confirmed its Accident Reconstruction Unit would investigate the cause of the accident.

“It is not clear at this stage what actually occurred before the accident,” he said.

“A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Alberton police station for further investigations.”

The driver’s grey BMW sedan was carrying four passengers when it collided with a white VW sedan driven by a 31-year-old man at 21:54 on Saturday August 3.

The driver of the BMW sustained serious injuries and was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital. The driver of the white VW was taken to the Union hospital due to the serious injuries he sustained.

“A 13-year-old male passenger was rushed to Tambo memorial hospital, two male passengers, 17 and 30, were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath,” Mokheseng said.

A 22-year-old male passenger was certified dead at the scene of the accident.
