Maynard Kraak releases his new movie, ‘Sonskyn beperk’

South African director and producer Maynard Kraak has had a long, fruitful career in the local entertainment industry. He has directed successful television shows such as ‘Generations’, ‘This Life’, ‘Binneland’, ‘Scandal’, ‘Parys Parys’, ‘Loitering in Jozi’, produced the box office hit ‘Knysna’ and produced, conceptualised and directed the romantic comedy ‘Vrou Soek Boer’. Now, Maynard is ready to release his highly anticipated romantic dramedy, ‘Sonskyn Beperk’.

The film stars Anelle Bester and Neels van Jaarsveld and focuses on the current obsession the world has with craft beer. The film follows Anya du Plessis who leaves her high-end job and boyfriend in New York City to come back to her estranged father, Marius, here in South Africa.

After some financial troubles, Anya and Marius might have to sell their farm. Marius has become obsessed with brewing craft beer and through this, Anya and Marius meet Ruan. Ruan has been searching the country to find the best craft beer recipe to take to his large corporate brewing company. Naturally, falling in love is the last thing Anya planned on but she finds herself attracted to Ruan. However, once she realises Ruan has been trying to steal her father’s recipe, things get complicated. The film is a tale of love and family and is bound to touch the hearts of every single person who watches it.

“The film is a celebration of South Africa’s diversity, in front of and behind the camera,” Maynard says. “What I have done is create the opportunity for young creatives that normally don’t get the chance to showcase their talents in a senior creative decision-making role, to demonstrate just how capable they are. From writer through production to editor, that responsibility they were entrusted with bore tremendous dividends in the end product, of which I am especially proud.” Maynard adds that “in Anelle Bester, we have uncovered another diamond, who had we not bothered spending 14 months in casting, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of a fresh talent, may not have got her break. The love for what we do, the care for what we produce and the honesty with which we have pursued the creation of this film can be felt from the first to last moments of the film.”

Later this year, Maynard will release his highly anticipated English film ‘Finders Keepers’ which, he says, is one of the most exciting projects he has ever worked on. This year will also see Maynard shooting his exciting action film ‘Beast’ while he conceptualises the two films he plans on shooting in 2017.
