GALLERY: Dis-Chem Sun City Swim a success despite the weather

The annual Dis-Chem Sun City swim was a success.

ALTHOUGH the annual Dis-Chem Sun City Swim was delayed for a couple of hours due to thunderstorms and lightning, the event was successful.

The swimmers had to endure some choppy waters throughout the day in the various distances. The event, which recently took place and was organised by the Gauteng Masters, was eventually concluded and every entrant had their swim throughout the day.

This Midmar Mile seeding event attracted more than 1 500 entrants in the various events, and has grown from a humble start of 173 swimmers doing their two laps of a 750m course in October.

Sun City has remained committed to the event since 1998, with 2019 being its 22nd edition of the swim.

The event included 3km for men and women of all ages, 1 500m for disabled swimmers and swimmers of all ages, and a 600m fun swim. The 3km swim was also in accordance with the FINA open-water rules.

The first male home in the 3km swim was Ruan Breytenbach in 35:34, second Zander Landman in 36:14 and third Connor Albertyn in 36:52.

The first woman in the 3km swim was Michelle Weber in 37:27, second Leigh McMorran in 37:32 and in third place was Catherine van Rensburg in 37:41.

Breytenbach made it a double winning in 3km and 1 500m. His time in the 1 500m was 17:39, while Michelle Weber came in first as well in the 1 500m women division in a time of 18:32.

The disabled swimmers in the 1 500m men and women categories were won by Terence Parkin in 22:08 and Shireen Shapiro in 23:15.
