Three residents competed for Braai master title

FIRES were burning, excitement ruled the roost as the braaiers were all ready to show off their skills. Builders Warehouse Glen Eagles recently hosted the Builders Master Braai competition. Three teams participated in the competition.

They were chosen from the 10 entrants of the Builders Master Braai competition. The finalists went out tooth and nail braaing steaks with the aim of being crowned the winner.

The competition was judged by two local braai sensations Corné ‘Borries’ Bornman and Kagiso Mpinda, better known as The Brafia or Alberton’s very own Braai Mafia.

Corné told the RECORD that everyone who participated did their best but unfortunately there could only be one winner.

“We judged every steak with the same techniques and the teams did put their hearts into it. We have given them constructive feedback, but it was a great effort from all three teams,” added Corné.

Kagiso told the RECORD that when they judge they look for appearance, juiciness, tenderness and whether the steak is loaded with flavour and can be easily cut.

“The taste of the steak carries much weight and we always advise braaiers to taste the steak before serving people, and they must bear in mind who they’re braaing it for,” added Kagiso.

Local residents Conrad and Quintin Maree walked away with the Builders Master Braai Title. They went home with a stunning 57cm Weber kettle braai sponsored by Weber South Africa.

The winners told the RECORD that they did not think they would win, because they were competing against bigger teams.

“We are very happy because we put real effort into marinating and braaing the steak and we would like to thank the judges and organisers,” said the winners.

The runners-up were Ryan Theron and Lionel De Sousa from Seeff Properties.

The Group 1 Renault and The Glen BrotherHood Strongman show kept the crowds entertained. Strongman Africa Union superstar Werner Neveling did a dead lift of a Renault Kwid with five people in the car. The fun-filled event was a great day out for the whole family.

The next Builders Family Fun Fest will take place on July 6.
