Alberton Bowling Club hosts the start of bowling Business League

Alberton Bowling Club hosts the 11th opening of the Business League.

ALBERTON Bowling Club hosted the 11th Business League opening on February 7.

The league started off with 18 teams and over the years grew to 34 teams entering in 2018, which unfortunately had to be restricted to 28 teams this year.

The reason for the limit on teams entering is that a third green is not ready for play this year.

Apart from great fun for those taking part, the club also benefited and in 2018 it gained approximately 20 new members.

“The new members are playing really good bowls now because of the league,” said Renée Venter from the club.

Renée told the RECORD that the Business League was a dream she had 11 years ago with the aim to polish the image of bowls in the business community and to take away the perception that bowls is an old man’s game. Renée further told the RECORD that they have reached an agreement with this year’s teams to play the finals on March 6 since a day’s play was missed due to rain on February 13.

“Today serious bowls is played with players from a very young age as early as 10 years old. That was the age of the youngest Skip that I worked with at the Junior Championships in Klerksdorp a number of years ago,” added Venter.

The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all their sponsors: Raceview Motors, Perfect Delivery, Neethling Attorneys, JMB Cranes, Pact Marketing, Eddie Wallace and Ill Forno Restaurant for vouchers.

Furthermore, Renée conveyed her big thanks to the members of Alberton Bowling Club as well as four members from Brackenhurst Bowling Club who are assisting the different teams, providing bowls, teaching and doing the scorecards.
