HOSPICE gave away a wheelbarrow full of treats and goodies worth around R3 000 at the Lemon Tree Shopping Centre on Saturday, 12 March.

Tickets for the lucky draw were sold at R20 a ticket, with the money made going towards the purchase of beds for their facilities, aimed at caring for people in need.

Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services is an independent, community-driven organisation and the first-ever service of its kind in the Greater Alberton area of Ekurhuleni. It provides specialist palliative care to people experiencing the impact of life-threatening illness, and aims to meet their physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs. It also supports their families through this experience and brings solace to those grieving the death of a loved one. Its palliative care is offered by a team of doctors, professional nurses, therapists, social workers, spiritual counsellors and volunteers.

The prize was won by ticket number 574, Edith Prinsloo, who could not be present on the day.

The smaller prizes went to Willem Roodtman, Nicky-Lee van Wyk, Jason Smit, Jayce Moodley, Eland Bronkhorst and Nico.

Hospice would like to thank the following people for making this effort a success:

Fernanda Lavos – Lemon Tree Centre Manager for the floor space; Pick n Pay management for storing the first prize, as well as assistance with ticket sales; Lucas Niemandt from Family Furniture for donating the ‘lounger’ and ornamental hippo which was sold to enable the purchase of the contents of the first prize; Christine Bosch from Inkmate Lemon Tree for all the coffee for volunteers and helping with ticket sales; Brackenwest Hardware for donating the wheelbarrow in which the contents of the first prize was held; and last but not least, every Alberton resident who helped with the project and supported the project by buying tickets.

“We will keep everyone updated as to how many beds were purchased with the money raised,” said Rienie Venter, who initiated this project.
