The Bag Lady

Long weekends are coming up and, of course, the Easter weekend is one of them.

Yummy chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, not to mention a good excuse for a lie in with a good book and cup of coffee, lunch out and, if the weather is warm, maybe a picnic. Sounds amazing!

The Cakeaway

Last week I tasted the absolute best carrot cake I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve tasted lots over the years, as it’s always been a favourite of mine.

The Cakeaway opened last week in The Broads Shopping Centre, Mulbarton, and it’s owned by Clayton Ronald. Full cakes, cupcakes and slices of cakes are sold, as well as wedding cakes, birthday cakes, speciality cakes and novelty cakes. Flavours include carrot, chocolate, Bar One choc, vanilla, red velvet and lemon and poppy. It’s the same with cupcakes, apart from lemon meringue and Fererro Rocher. A decadent baked cheesecake can also be ordered.

The full cakes (day to day) come in two sizes, 20cm and 26cm, and the prices are fantastic, especially considering no pre-mixes are used, just fresh ingredients. Carrot cake is the most expensive of the full cakes, packed with pecan nuts, R180 (20cm) and R250 (26cm).

Cupcakes are priced per cake but if you order a larger quantity it will work out slightly cheaper.

Clayton, who is a qualified pastry chef, is passionate about what he does and did a stint with The Cake Genie and The Cake Boss. “I’ve always had a love for baking and used to help my grandmother when I was younger. Perfection is something I strive for and I only use the best ingredients in all my cakes, being very particular about eggs. The freshest eggs make the freshest cakes. I also enjoy the icing side of speciality cakes and I teach cake decorating too,” said Clayton.

I know where I’ll be ordering my cakes from now on! Phone 011 682 3194 for more information or to order a cake (full cakes need to be ordered one day before collection). Alternatively, visit: wwwthecakeaway.co.za or go to the same address for Facebook.

Bouquets of the Week

Luisa Vieira gives a bouquet to Natbrad Gas Installers. “We used this gentleman’s (Steve) services when we installed our gas stove and called him to upgrade. He is honest, helpful and efficient. He is exactly the genuine person we need in today’s times. The contact number is 082 800 3296.”

“I’d like to nominate Rita from Cats Exclusive for a big bouquet. I went to the cattery to pick up my cat and Rita walked me back to my car. She asked what stone was in my ring and when I looked the diamond had gone. She thought it was a dark stone as my hand was in the shade by my car as I put my cat in. She said she’d look for the diamond but I didn’t even know if I’d lost it there or beforehand while I was out and about. Much to my joy she phoned me a while later to say she had found it just outside the cattery door. Thanks you so much Rita,” said Maria Manen.

That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
