On this day in History: First African American Oscar

On Leap Day in 1940 Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Academy Award.

Apart from Hattie’s Academy Award, Gone with the wind swept through the Oscars like a tornado, winning Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Screenplay (Sidney Howard), and Best Art Direction, Film Editing and Cinematography.
