Damaged drain is becoming a real stinker

While the driver of the front loader was piling up the rubbish, the top of the drain was shifted.

THE horrible, stinking dumping site between the Catholic Church and Eden Park Primary School, in Covair Street, was due for cleaning because of the health hazard it poses, but now there is another problem – a damaged drain.

About three weeks ago, the Ekurhuleni Metro dispatched a front-end loader to clean the dumping site and heap-up the rubbish.

The drain was accidentally damaged by the loader and has, since then, been spilling raw sewage, which is now flowing down Alfa and Abraham streets.

A resident in Covair Street, who does not want to be named, alleged that he witnessed what happened to the drain.

“The assistant, who is supposed to direct the driver in the loader was sitting with the driver in the loader and not directing him as to where drains and cables are situated,” he said.

”While the driver was piling up the rubbish, the top of the drain was shifted; I think some of the rubbish fell into the drain and it is possibly blocked.”

For the past three weeks residents of Alfa and Abrahams streets have been complaining about the horrible smell they have to endure.

The EMM was approached for comment but, at the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
