Adopt, don’t shop – simple and easy

Come along to Alberton SPCA and meet your forever friend. You won’t regret it!

WITH thousands of animals in shelters, adopting rather than buying a pet is the ideal solution.

This way you are helping the situation, not adding to it by supporting unscrupulous breeders who are often doing it only for the money and do not care about the welfare of the pet.

Adopting a pet from the SPCA is a straightforward procedure. You need to visit the society in person, to view the animals available.

Once you have selected the pet of your choice you complete an adoption application form in the office. A home inspection is then carried out to ensure you have a safe and secure environment and also that your other pets are well cared for.

If you live in the Alberton area this is done quite quickly, but, if you are from out of town, the Alberton SPCA will have to rely on the SPCA nearest to your home to carry out an inspection. This can, therefore, take a bit longer.

Once your home inspection has been approved the pet is then sterilised and vaccinated. You can usually collect your pet on the same day as the operation is done.

When your pet is handed over, you will also receive de-worming tablets, to ensure it is in the best possible position health-wise. You will need to return approximately 10 days later, for your pet to have the stitches removed.

In the first two weeks after the adoption, if there are any health problems, you can return to the SPCA for assistance.

The cost of adopting a dog is R550, and a cat R350.

This is a small fee compared to the cost of buying a pet and then having to pay for sterilisation, vaccinations, etc. The adoption fee covers the cost of the sterilisation, vaccinations and de-worming.

At adoption you can also have a microchip fitted for an additional fee of R250.

By adopting you are saving two lives, the pet you are adopting and the one who will take its place.

Shelters are always full to overflowing with animals needing homes and that’s why the SPCA advocates ”Adopt, don’t shop”.

Come along to the Alberton SPCA and meet your forever friend. You won’t regret it! The SPCA can be contacted on 011 907 1568 and is situated in Lincoln Road, Newmarket. The society also has a Facebook page, showing some of the animals up for adoption.
