Committee meeting held at council chambers

On Thursday, February 18, a committee meeting for ward 38 was held in the council chambers of the Alberton Civic Centre.

ON Thursday, 18 February, a committee meeting for Ward 38 was held in the council chambers of the Alberton Civic Centre.

Items on the agenda included:

1) Jackson Dam: there seems to be no progress on the acquisition of fish for the dam, so fishermen (and some community members) are buying fish at R200 each and paying for them out of their own pockets.

It was proposed that a sign on how to take care of the fish at the dam be erected. Clr Visser said that she would make contact with Clr Sonja Kraai to remind her to get some fish from other dams, as promised.

2) Bridge over Swartkoppies Road: the bridge is complete, but a sign indicating the height of the bridge, as well as a board indicating the name of the bridge, are still outstanding.

3) Sewer problem at Orion Primary School: a sewer at the school seems to be overflowing continually here and Mr Jacobs was requested to follow up on the situation.

4) Brackendowns SAPS: a follow-up letter has to be written regarding the poorly lit parking area. In addition, it was reported that reservists were no longer allowed to carry firearms and were meant to be taken for competency tests, but this had not happened for more than three years. The point was made that the reservists are willing to voluntarily work for their community but were now denied the opportunity to do so.

“The reservists are scheduled to go for training (street survival, including firearms) in April, and upon completion, will receive a permit and they can get back to their duties,” said the Brackendowns SAPD spokesperson, Sgt. Lindi Moloi.

5) Locked water meter: another issue discussed was a water meter that had been locked over the holiday period without the property owner being informed.

The next council meeting will be held on 17 March at 19:00, on the fourth floor of the Alberton Civic Centre.
