Mother and daughter get their NSC

Woman obtains a National Senior certificate at age 47.

To obtain a national senior certificate (NSC) for the first time at the age of 47, is a lesson for all of us that it is never too late to study and better yourself. This is the remarkable story of a dream that came true for Thuli Shelembe. She and her 24-year-old daughter, Sonia Shelembe, struggled to find a job without a senior certificate and therefore, joined the adult education classes at Marais Viljoen High School in 2014. They passed five of the six subjects with the required aggregate, but failed Afrikaans as their additional language. They did not give up and instead registered again and on advice of teacher, Llewellyn Oosthuizen, took Zulu as an additional language subject which Thuli passed with an average of 60 per cent and Sonia with 50 per cent. Now they are proud holders of a senior certificate. Due to Thuli’s perseverance, Llewellyn requested Thuli to assist other students after hours with Zulu, as most of them really struggled with Afrikaans as an additional language. Though Thuli is a full-time general assistant at Marais Viljoen, she is already conducting Saturday classes in Zulu for other adult education students. Llewellyn is also arranging classes for people who would like to learn Zulu in order to communicate better with their employees or colleagues. Marais Viljoen is very proud of Thuli and wishes her good luck and is certain she has a bright future ahead of her. People interested in learning Zulu at Marais Viljoen are welcome to contact Thuli on 072 054 0088.
