Alberton schools are overflowing

Edel Schostar is a frustrated Brackenhurst resident who questions why children from outlying areas get first preference when children from the sububrs cannot be placed in the schools around the corner.

ALBERTON- My adopted, sociable child is a star, a child who has colours for cricket and soccer and loves life.

All three our older children were in Bracken High, but when I went to enrol him the school was full. We live about two blocks from the school and my other children were so happy there.

We had to place him in Impact, at quite a fee, and cannot afford the payment for another year, but here we are again.

Last year I wanted to enrol him for 2016 at Bracken High, but they said I had to wait until they opened for enrolments.

When I got there the school was already full.

The problem is that many of the children are from outlying areas and arrive by bus from Soweto, Katlehong and so forth. They use someone’s address in the area and apply at the school of their choice, leaving no space for children from the area.

On contacting the Department of Education, they said I must place my child in Parklands or Glenbrack, which I refuse to do due to bad reputations.

High School Marais Viljoen says we live outside of their catchment area. Alberton is overflowing, but we allow people from outside to fill up our schools. How fair is that?
