R2 million drug lab bust in Alrode

Among the equipment found were pressing machines, chemicals and cooking equipment.

ALRODE – One of the largest mandrax factories in Gauteng, with equipment valued at R2 million, was found in Alrode last week during a Hawks bust.

Among the equipment found were pressing machines, chemicals and cooking equipment – everything needed for a smoothly run mandrax factory.

Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda, told the RECORD that they followed up on a tipoff and explained that although no drugs were found at the factory, one suspect, a 37-year-old male, was arrested.

“It looked like the drugs had been moved just before our people arrived. Although only one suspect has been arrested, we are positive that this investigation will lead to more arrests.

“This is the third largest manufacturing setup we have clamped down on, following the factories found in Sandton and Soweto,” Netshiunda said.

The suspect appeared in the Palmridge Magistrates Court and was released on R50 000 bail. His next appearance will be on January 26, 2016.

Anybody with information about any drug dealers or places of manufacturing are urged to contact Alberton SAPS on 011 861 6800 or Brackenhurst SAPS on 011 617 5600.
