Scrapyard fined for illegal dumping

A scrapyard in Alberton North has been fined for health related concerns.

ALBERTON – In early October RECORD received reports from residents in Alberton North regarding illegal dumping on the corner of Pieter Uys Avenue and Kritzinger Road.

The residents complained that rubbish was being heaped at the back of a store which overlooks a road that is very close to residential homes. The rubbish reportedly attracted rats and posed a health risk. There were also reports of an illegal scrapyard and excessive noise.

“There was a problem with refuse accumulation behind the establishment some weeks ago which was sorted out after intervention from the area’s environmental health practitioner. Follow-up visits showed that there were no further nuisances,” explained Themba Gadebe, the Ekurhuleni metro spokesman.

The matter of the illegal scrapyard on the corner of Pieter Uys Avenue and Kritzinger Road has reportedly been referred to the EMM’s City Development department to address zoning contraventions. The operator of the scrapyard had allegedly been fined twice for health related contraventions in the past.

“Further legal action will be instituted if and when required. The concerns about noise have been noted but we require more specifics on this matter. Detail of noise nuisance complaints caused by animals must be forwarded to the Environmental Health section for investigation. Other noise complaints should be referred to the Air Quality section,” Gadebe stated.
