EMM acknowledges library challenges

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) said they are aware of the challenges that Alberton Library users are currently experiencing.

Aletta Wright from South Crest wrote to the RECORD explaining how especially old and disabled people in wheelchairs are struggling to access the library.

“I would like to know how disabled people in wheelchairs are meant to get up to the library. In the past I would make use of the service lift as the ramp is too steep and impossible to use for those in wheelchairs,” she wrote.

“Old age pensioners cannot often get up the steps and it is them and the disabled who really need the library, but can no longer use it.”

Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, said the metro is experiencing difficulties due to construction taking place at the Alberton Civic Centre.

“The patron is welcome to contact the control librarian at the Alberton Library for assistance and alternative arrangements can be discussed,” Gadebe explained.

Wright also complained about the lack of reading material including magazines.

“EMM, why don’t you ever read and reply to things written in the suggestions book, like having magazines that you used to have but no longer do,” Wrigt wrote.

Gadebe responded that when librarians select periodicals, such as magazines, they need to look at the needs of the community and balance that against their available budget to make sure that the EMM offers a quality and professional service to everyone. “New periodicals have been ordered, taking into consideration all the identified needs, and will be on the shelves shortly,” he said.

Gadebe also said that the municipality appreciates input and comments from their library users and encourages patrons to continue writing in their comment and suggestion books.
