‘We cannot prove such allegations’

A resident is terrified after reportedly witnessing animal cruelty at Jackson Dam.

ALBERTON – An Alberton resident, who asked to remain anonymous, claims to have witnessed an act of animal cruelty at Jackson Dam.

On August 13, the resident reportedly saw a group of men attacking a small animal resembling a ferret. The resident was afraid to approach the men who were allegedly involved in attacking the creature. The animal’s distressed cub ran through the palisade fence.

The RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) to find out what residents can do in these situations.

“In the Jackson Dam and surrounds there are no animals that are kept by council. Animals that are normally at the dam are the ones that come with members of the public and according to the park by- laws all animals must always be on a leash.

To ascertain what really happened, we have investigated the said incident with the caretaker and the security, both who did not see anything.

We advise that owners be on the lookout for their animals and pets whenever they visit the dam since we cannot prove such allegations,” said EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe.
