VIDEO + GALLERY: EMPD vehicle lands on its roof

Driver of the Hyundai vehicle says the traffic light was green for her and that the EMPD vehicle skipped the red light.

TRAFFIC came to a standstill just after 08:00 this morning after two vehicles collided in Florentia.

One of the vehicles involved in the accident, which took place on the corner of Du Plessis Road and Second Avenue, belongs to the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).

The EMPD vehicle overturned and landed on its roof a few meters from where the initial collision occurred.

Lorraine Mullany, driver of the Hyundai i10 that collided with the EMPD vehicle, said she was on her way to her son’s office in Alberton North when the accident happened.

“The traffic light was green for me to go across Ring Road when the EMPD vehicle came speeding down, skipping the red traffic light.”

Mullany said she was unable to swerve out of the way.

“The vehicle is insured, but I am almost certain it is a write-off because it is extensively damaged.”

Emergency services and the Ekurhuleni Fire Department were quickly on the scene to assist the two injured passengers of each of the vehicles.

“I received on the scene treatment. I have noticed my legs and chest are a bit sore,” said Mullany.

Kevin Peel, National Paramedical Services spokesperson, said they transferred the driver of the EMPD vehicle to the Netcare Union Hospital for further treatment.

In a seperate incident, on Monday, August 24, an EMPD vehicle and a taxi collided at about 16:00 on the Old Vereeniging Road.

Peel said the two EMPD officers were taken to the Netcare Union Hospital while the injured taxi occupants were transported to several nearby hospitals.

The RECORD has contacted EMPD for comment but they were unable to provide any information yet.
