Robbers embark on R3-m spree

Three armed robbers had all the time in the world when they spent over two hours taking valuables from a home in South Crest.

SOUTH CREST ā€” Three armed robbers told an eight-year-old boy of South Crest that he should never do what they did, before fleeing with goods estimated to be worth over R3-million last Friday 24 July.Ā

Thozama were tied-up for hours inside his bedroom, at a complex in Vlei Street, on July 24, before help eventually arrived from a passerby who heard their cries for help.Ā 

“They (the robbers) have ransacked my entire bedroom looking for valuables,” Mhangwani said.Ā

‘”I am so upset about the fact that they have taken my watch collection ā€“ I have collected several of these watches during my overseas trips.”Ā 

He told how, at around 2:00, he was awakened by three men who switched on his bedroom lights and immediately, without hesitation, explained to him that he wouldn’t be harmed if he didn’t scream or give them any trouble.Ā

They wanted to know how many people are living in the house, that belongs to his daughter, before they went to fetch the other three residents.Ā

“The robbers were in no hurry at all, ” he added.Ā 

“They helped themselves to liquor, food and even groceries, while they searched the house for about two and a half hours, before fleeing the scene in three of our cars at about 04:30.”

Mhangwani said the robbers were not at all violent and even assisted his daughter by bringing down her asthma machine and medicine.Ā

“They locked us up in the room and took our home keys and gate remotes with them, but forgot a bag with their break-in tools,” he said.Ā 

“I am still shivering as I stand here; I am afraid that they might come back,” he said, still wearing his pyjamas during the RECORD’s visit.

CPS Security was also on the scene, together with the police, to provide any assistance that might be needed.

Sgt Phora Nkuna, spokesperson for the Alberton Police Station, said the robbers gained access to the house through an aluminium window, wearing gloves and masks.Ā

They took three cars — an ML Mercedes Benz, an SL Mercedes Benz and a Volkswagen Polo Vivo — together with electrical appliances, clothing and money.Ā 

Nkuna said no one was injured and no arrests had been made at the time of going to press.
