Lion’s player wishes school good luck

On the same Saturday that the Lions played their final Super League match for the season, a Lions rugby player, Wynand Willis, paid a special visit to Hoërskool Dinamika.

ALBERTON – The purpose of the visit was to wish the team good luck for the big Beeld trophy league encounter against strong Linden and also to do the hand-over of the player of the match awards.

On the rugby field, Dinamika scored the same points total as in their derby victory against Hoërskool Alberton. The difference, however, this time was that Dinamika was not the victors but Linden went home with a 34-20 victory.

The home side started strongly and scored the first try in the tenth minute, but Linden equalled five minutes later 7-7. Another Linden try 22 minutes into play, put them in the lead which they kept until the final whistle after leading 26-13 at half time. It was among the forwards that Linden dominated to lay the foundation for solid interaction between the forwards and the backline to achieve victory by five tries including one penalty try.

In the curtain raisers, it was Dinamika’s u.14 with a runaway victory of 59-5 and the u.16 team’s score of 26-0 who beat Linden and reached the Golden Lions semi-finals play-offs. Linden u.15 won 27-7, but the seconds drew 10-all.

The WHP Auto Services player of the match awards, sponsored by Wynand and Hannetjie Pretorius, went to Dinamika’s Dehan Williams and the one for Linden to their number 12 centre.

Congratulations to the organisers of this special occasion, Salome Voleko, Naomi Lombard and their team, for bringing the likeable Lions player Wynand Willis to Alberton; a player to watch in the future. He started with Waterkloof Hoërskool, Blue Bulls Sevens, emerging Boks Sevens and then the Leopards together with Dinamika’s first Springbok, Andre’ Pretorius, and now he is in the Lions’ den.

All in all it was not a good day for rugby in Alberton, when mighty UJ demolished the A-Square Forklift Alberton teams. The first team was the only home team to score against the students. Final score was 7-72 with Anthony Kapp the try scorer and Ryno Brits succeeded with the conversion.

Other results: Marais Viljoen continued its winning streak by defeating Die Anker at Brakpan by 40-14, including six tries.
