A-Square-Forklift Alberton come out tops in derby

A-Square-Forklift Alberton is the new holder of the Kevin de Klerk trophy for the first time.

ALBERTON – At the Union Bulldogs derby and family fun day, the Alberton boys came and spoiled the party when the first side managed to beat the home side in the dying minutes of the game. In doing so, A-Square-Forklift Alberton reversed the heartbroken defeat of a year ago when Union walked away victorious.

This year’s close encounter saw Alberton in control with ball and territory possession in the first half, but the halftime score was still 0-0. Twelve minutes into the second half, fly half Renier Wiessener successfully kicked a penalty for Union Bulldogs to lead 3-0. In the eighteenth minute, Alberton’s flank, Anthony Kapp, went over for the first try of the match. The centre, Reinand Swanepoel, converted to put A-Square Forklift Alberton in the lead with 7-3. This was the score until less than ten minutes to go, when Union hit back with a try from Kyle Powell, to put the home side back in the lead with 8-7.

Kevin Grobbler followed-up his two tries against Randfontein when he scored the brilliant winning try which resulted in a 14-8 victory. Reinand Swanepoel succeeded again with the conversion.

A-Square-Forklift Alberton chairman Manie Reyneke expressed his delight about the fact that his club’s long and hard battle over three years, to surge upwards, finally resulted in a great victory against Union.

Other results: Second teams A-Square Forklift Alberton won 31-7, u.21 Alberton won 50-3. Third teams Union Bulldogs won 41-7 and u.19 Union won 26-12.
