Reading celebrates 75 years

Reading Country Club in New Redruth, Alberton, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in June this year, and management and members are equally very proud and excited about this milestone.

ALBERTON – A grand affair is on the cards for the celebrations in June, and included in this is a planned three-day Festival of Golf on June 3, 4 and 5 with a spectacular grand prize to be won in a lucky draw.

The golf festival is open to members and visitors alike with green fees set at R250 per player if you play only one day, R450 per player for two days’ golf and R600 per player for all three days. A prize-giving meal and fabulous prizes are included in the green fees.

Reading CC, once referred to by golfing greats Bobby Locke and Gary Player as one of the most beautiful parklands in the world, boasts a rich history and has gone from strength to strength since 1939, when a group of families came together and bought this 140 acres of land.

Testament to its reputation as a spectacular course, Reading’s greenkeeper Sean Byrne received the highest honour as Golf Course Superintendent of the year at the 2014 Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s Awards Ceremony in December.

Says Dave Smith, manager at Reading CC: “Sean has an amazing affinity with nature, a true passion for greenkeeping and that rare quality of knowing instinctively what is ailing his beloved golf course and the correct course of action to take. His knowledge and experience make him a man sought out by his fellow greenkeepers when it comes to advice. “

Smith has high praise for the club’s members too, whom he describes as “exceptionally loyal – some of them have been playing regularly every week for more than 50 years. The population of Johannesburg’s southern suburbs and Alberton have a great love for where they come from, and their support of Reading and all the club has to offer is an example of this”.

The club today boasts a membership of 816 with an average of 109 rounds of golf played per day.
