City cracks the whip on illegal scrapyards

The City of Ekurhuleni is cracking the whip on illegal scrapyard owners and recently heaps of scrap metal were uncovered in Windmill Park in Boksburg.

“As the City we view municipal by-laws contravention as a serious offence, we therefore urge all residents and business owners to abide by these laws or they will face the full might of the law,” said Ekurhuleni acting spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala.

According to the Ekurhuleni town planning scheme regulations, all land owners wishing to carry out extension of their premises must have approval from the municipal building inspectors. Residents are advised to approach their nearby Customer Care Area offices to obtain information on the zoning processes. The CCA offices are also a resource for residents who would like to report illegal scrap yards in their area.

The Alberton CCA office is in Alwyn Taljaard Street and open weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00 except Wednesdays, when it is open from 09:00. The Alberton CCA office telephone number is 011 999 2100.

The City encourages residents to continue reporting any suspicious or illegal activity to the call centre on 0860 54 3000.

“Not abiding by municipal building by-laws places owners at risk, which could result in loss of life, loss of property and jail time,” concluded Ramashala.
