The Bag Lady: New products

Can you believe we are in April? It seems like yesterday I was un-decorating the Christmas tree to pack it away and now here we are munching Easter eggs!

For banting readers I see Woolworths has Cauliflower Rice, a bit pricey (R29.99 for 400g packet) but perfect instead of couscous, and this is just ready to cook. So easy! Wine lovers – Robertson Winery introduces Lightly Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc with an added dazzle of tiny bubbles.

Food trends for 2015

With all the foodie programmes on TV, cooking is now seen as fun, social and fashionable. Fresh foods are being used more and recipes tried out more often.

Formal meals used to be very popular, especially if you were inviting friends around for dinner. Now the trend is leaning towards drinks and snacks with quick healthy food being prepared and enjoyed. Having a cocktail party, here’s a few ideas.

Roast beef and horseradish cream on pear

Mix together 1 tablespoon low-fat sour cream and 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish. Dividing evenly, top ½ sliced pear with 3 slices deli roast beef, the horseradish cream, and fresh herbs (such as chervil, parsley, or tarragon).

Lemony avocado with endive dippers

Mash 1 chopped avocado with 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Serve with endive leaves.

Cherry tomatoes with goat cheese

Dividing evenly, top 5 halved large cherry tomatoes with 2 tablespoons fresh goat’s cheese. Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons chopped herbs (such as chives, basil, or parsley).

Bagel with ricotta and strawberries

Spread ½ toasted whole-grain “flat” bagel with 2 tablespoons fresh ricotta. Top with 1 cup sliced strawberries. Drizzle with 1 teaspoon honey or agave nectar.
