Load shedding: why us and not them?

Recently some residents have expressed concern that load shedding seems to be affecting some areas more than others.

Eskom answers this question among others in its Frequently Asked Questions on its website.

Eskom has agreements with certain large clients that they will keep the power on; on the condition that they reduce their electricity usage significantly during times of load shedding.

They do not cut off critical entities that directly contribute to the creation of power supply like coal mines, oil refineries and water supply pumps. It is the network proximity of customers to the large or critical customers that means that some people experience more load shedding.
