Alberton Home Affairs still not ready for Smart ID’s

The Smart ID card application roll out has been in the process of implementation from February 2014.

The Smart ID card application roll out has been in the process of implementation from February 2014. According to the Department of Home Affairs’ website 70 offices are ready to process applications. Alberton Home Affairs Department is not listed as one of the offices listed ready to assist with applications on the Department’s website. The three said to be ready for applications in Ekurhuleni are Boksburg Regional Office, Edenvale Regional Office and Springs Regional Office.

The senior residents have nonetheless persevered and attempted to apply for their ID cards at the Alberton branch. Some have successfully applied, however the service has left something to be desired. Community members have described the process as “a total disgrace”.

Last year Home Affairs was quoted as saying that the Alberton branch was not ready for applications. The department was contacted for comment, but the RECORD received no response.
