Inside Report with Michael Basch: Ekurhuleni gets a clean audit

So the Auditor Generals report is out and Ekurhuleni has passed with a clean audit. Congratulations Ekurhuleni, well done to the hardworking boys and girls that made this a reality.

But what does this actually mean? Well on the face of it; it means that the city is running well and that the AG agrees with that. Only that’s not entirely true, you see the clean audit is an accounting accolade it doesn’t take service delivery into account. No this is just a finance perspective; what the clean audit means is that we have pointed out to the AG where the problems are before he had to show us. But I still applaud the city for achieving this. It is most certainly a step in the right direction.

Now, not to sound pessimistic, but we have had a number of steps in the right direction over the last few years that have promptly been followed by leaps in the wrong direction. Can the city please, please grow from this audit and start to roll out the thinking that got them this into every department.

Roads for example, our roads are in such a terrible state, I am too afraid to ride by motorbike at the moment, because you never know what lurks around the next corner. Potholes are like the great white sharks of our roads, you can ride along merrily for days, but all it takes is one encounter and you could loose an arm. Not that that is fair on the sharks, they are by nature highly efficient hunters and potholes are created by the nature of inefficiency.

Lastly, yes it’s back to load shedding and it’s as painful as ever. My colleagues and I have asked for members of the provincial legislature as well as the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance to meet with business owners to assess the real cost of the blackouts. So if this has affected your business, please join us on Friday February 6, West Hall, Alberton Civic Centre at 10:30 so we can take this issue further. And with that I wish you all a wonderful week, stay dry, warm and hopefully in the light.
