Mayor remarks on Peace Corps

The mayor reminded communities that restoration of peace and order is a primary goal.

EKURHULENI – Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Mondli Gungubele was in attendance at the  inauguration of 260 Peace Corps recruits. After observing a moment of silence for the passing of two Peace Corps fellows and former President Nelson Mandela, Cllr Gungubele called attention to projects promoting peace and stability in Ekurhuleni.

This year’s recruits are equally distributed across genders and 83 recruits participated in the demilitarisation program. The demilitarisation candidates are mostly made up of unemployed former freedom fighters.

The Peace Corps functions to prevent crime; enforce by-laws and report service delivery issues among other duties. Cllr Gungubele stated that the Peace Corps strategy is an initiative introduced to increase Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department numbers and create employment opportunities in the area.

The mayor concluded by reminding communities that restoration of peace and order is a primary goal, and calling on the community to work together to make the city a better region to stay, play and work.
